Born in the creative cauldron of England in 1967, psych popsters Ice expressed such versatility and diversity in their music to scupper any long-standing career, major labels seeking narrower more straightforward propositions to market.

Decca Records gave the band (Grant Serpell: drums, Lynton Naiff: organ, John Carter: bass, Glyn James: vocals and Steve Turner: guitar) a try, releasing two chart-promising singles over ‘67/’68 in “Anniversary (Of Love)” and “Ice Man” but then gave up.
In that short period Ice had also garnered the attention of BBC Radio, recording a session at its Piccadilly Studio 1 in London, home also to The Beatles and Eddie Cochran amongst other pop luminaries of the day.
The singles, the live material plus later demos by the band as well as songs by Ice’s progenitor, The Baskervilles (aka Russell’s Clump). taped live at Sussex University, make up this pitch-perfect period piece of a compilation.

Reflecting on Ice all these years later, vocalist Glyn James observed:
“When people talk about the nineteen sixties, you can see the old films running in their heads – The Beatles, The Rolling Sones, Jimi Handrix, Blow Up, The Servant, girls in miniskirts, parties in Chelsea, half-naked people dancing in the fields – and it all happened”, adding, “it was the most thrilling time to make music.”
Ice was to scatter its last drops into the talent pool that was jazz rock act Affinity and, for later, chart-busting ‘70s pop group, Sailor.
