Formed in 1974, British funk act Olympic Runners was formed by legendary producer Mike Vernon (Fleetwood Mac, Focus, Dr Feelgood), initially to back American bluesman Jimmy Dawkins for a session scheduled at Olympic Studios in London, inspiring the group’s name.
Having made a promisingly thumping start with 1974 debut ‘Put Your Money Where Your Mouth Is’, the band returned the following year with ‘Out in Front’, funk to the fore and tapping nicely into the nascent disco vibe.
Its line-up of seasoned musicians included drummer Glen LeFleur, Chicagoan guitarist Joe Jammer, bassist DeLisle Harper and vocalist Pete Wingfield (who in the same year was to enjoy a solo hit single in “Eighteen with a Bullet“).
Catchy, commercial and packed with dancefloor fillers, the album was well-received and determined how in a few years’ time this exceptional band was to hit the mainstream.
