This beautifully-chilled and stripped-back take of The Korgis’s 1980 smash hit measures the enduring appeal of the song.
Formed In 1978 by James Warren and Andy Davis from the ashes of their progressive band Stackridge, The Korgis swiftly achieved chart success in ‘If I Had You’ – a 1979 number 13 hit in the UK.
‘Everybody’s Got to Learn Sometime’ followed it up in a big way – a number 1 in France, placed at number 18 on USA Billboard and in the top 20 in Belgium, Netherlands, Ireland, Spain, Italy, Australia, New Zealand – the song, written by James, has been covered countless times, notably by Beck (2004) for the movie ‘The Eternal Sunshine of the Spotless Mind’.
Musicians as varied as Richard Thompson, Lindsey Buckingham, Sharon Corr, Erasure and Baby D. have all recorded their own interpretations of the evergreen work.
On its 40 anniversary, James Warren together with collaborator Matt Owens of Noah and the Whale have delivered an affecting acoustic version of the song incorporating a restored second verse of lyrics edited out of the original 1979 Korgis track.
