Title: Black On White
File: Pop/Psych
London-born Bobby Harrison was a founder member of Procol Harum before leaving to form his first own band psych/pop act Freedom in 1968 with Procol Harum guitarist Ray Royer.
The original line-up recorded its debut soundtrack for cult Italian art-house film ‘Nero Su Bianco (‘Attraction’ also known as Black On White)’ as well as issuing a couple of non-album singles, included on this release along with early mixes and alternative takes.
With a sound veering to that of Traffic, the band wrote and recorded 14 titles for the film within two months at Olympic Studios in London with Eddie Kramer and Glyn Johns engineering, and appeared playing on stage in the film.
Directed by Tinto Brass, avant garde and risqué for its time, the film was critically acclaimed at the Cannes Film Festival but has remained cult viewing.
Moving on, Harrison revised the band’s line-up to record second album, ‘Freedom At Last’, moving from psych/pop to a heavier sound.
Freedom recorded a further four albums (including two for Vertigo Records) and toured with Black Sabbath and Jethro Tull.
Harrison went on to form SNAFU with future-Whitesnake guitarist Mickey Moody, scoring a further three acclaimed releases.
