From his time fronting 1960’s charters Love Affair, to helming ‘70’s rock acts Ellis and Widowmaker, to recording a slew of acclaimed solo albums in the ‘80s and beyond, Steve Ellis has remained ‘on song’ and unbending in his search for perfection.
His powerful yet soulful voice, one that defines British music, has never sounded better that on his solo albums and this compilation of songs from records made between 1977 to 2011 evidences the fact beautifully.
From bouncing upbeat opener “Hit The Spot” to a closing acoustic take on Love Affair’s 1967 chartbuster “Everlasting Love”, ‘March On (21st Century Solo)’ takes in Steve’s ballads, rockers and everything in between.
Especially chosen by him, songs here include highlights from the late 70’s A-list talent-packed ‘The Last Angry Man’, 2008’s ‘Best of Days (Roger Daltrey and Paul Weller guesting), and 2011’s ‘Ten Commitments’ featuring some of Steve’s long favourite songs.
Everything here defined by a trademark vocal styling, likened to those of fellow Steves Marriott and Winwood – all under the spell of the great ay Charles.
