Played exclusively by Steve on synthesizers, its roots lie in his creative philosophy of channelling mood into music:
“I tend to find my ideas as an emotional reaction to the sound of the instrument, rather than a crafting of melody and harmony, which seems to appear while I am improvising.”
Known as a recording and performing artist as well composer of multiple film scores and forty solo albums, Steve left his first band Joint before it morphed into Supertramp to study composition and piano at the prestigious Berlin Konservatorium, staying on in Germany to play for a year with Tangerine Dream.
He next joined cult progressive blues band Steamhammer, touring and playing on its ‘Mk II’ album as well as co-writing the single “Autumn Song” which was to top the French charts.
At Edgar Froese’s request, Steve returned to Tangerine Dream to record the band’s 11th album, ‘Cyclone’, his vocals and flute work game-changing the band toward a progressive rock styling.
He has latterly played with Eat Static, composed film soundtracks many solo albums. Ever the multi-tasking creative, Steve also worked as a model-maker on Ridley Scott’s seminal ‘Alien’ movie.
