“Originally to be called Dinosaur until discovering a band of that name stateside, Mammoth were genuine heavyweights in every sense. Their combined weight of over 100 stone and using mini Marshall stacks and a set design of huge tusks protruding out into the audience, combined with their amazing melodic rock, left lasting impressions on audiences.” Brian R Banks
MAMMOTH were a truly larger-than-life rock outfit led by man mountain singer Nicky Moore (ex- Samson) and big, bald bassist John McCoy famed for his former years in chart topping band Gillan. Along with Vinnie Read (drums) and Mac Baker (guitar), they were active from late 1986 to the end of 1989.
The band’s name wasn’t just metaphorical – members were famously plus-sized, and they leaned into it with humour. The track “Fatman” became a tongue in cheek signature song, celebrating their image with swagger and self -awareness.
‘XXXL’ delivers 1980’s-rooted heavy rock, blues infused metal and melodic hard rock. John McCoy’s and Nicky Moore’s tight songwriting and heavy hooks anchor this release while Nicky Moore showcases his signature gritty yet soulful voice.
Over the years “Can’t Take The Hurt” was featured in the film Nightmare On Elm Street 5, and “Fatman” appeared in the film Just Ask For Diamond (the band along for the ride acting as henchmen).
