Title:      Magical – In Memory of Tangerine Dream’s Edgar Froese

File:       Ambient/Electronic

Released to digital market: May 30th 2025

‘Magical (In Memory of Tangerine Dream’s Edgar Froese)’ was composed, performed and recorded in 2015 by former band member Steve Jolliffe after his colleague’s death.

A beautiful 53-minute ‘requiem for a friend’, it’s a warming and ambient aural experience inspired by a dream the artist had of Froese wandering in Jolliffe’s garden.

Played exclusively by Steve on synthesizers, it shares a similar musical ‘architecture’ to that of his and Froese’s iconic ensemble. “I see myself primarily not as a composer or musician in the strictest sense but as an environment-maker,” he said in an interview in 1984.

Known as a recording and performing artist as well composer of multiple film scores and forty solo albums, Steve is a British multi-instrumentalist.

He left the band Joint before it morphed into Supertramp to study composition and piano at the prestigious Berlin Konservatorium staying on in Germany to play for a year with Tangerine Dream.

He next joined cult progressive blues band Steamhammer, touring and playing on its ‘Mk II’ album as well as co-writing the single “Autumn Song” which topped the French charts.

At Edgar’s request, Steve went back to Tangerine Dream to record on the band’s 11th album, ‘Cyclone’, bringing for the first time the vocals and flute that took the band closer to a progressive rock styling.

He has latterly played with Eat Static, composed film soundtracks, an annual solo album, and – ever the multi-tasking creative – worked as a model-maker on Ridley Scott’s seminal ‘Alien’ movie.
