2024 sees the 50th anniversary release of ‘The Hoople’, one of Mott The Hoople’s best-remembered releases yielding chart hits in opening and closing tracks, “The Golden Age of Rock ‘n Roll” and “Roll Away The Stone”.
And it also welcomes a new release from the guitarist on that album, Luther Grosvenor, in ‘Another Journey’.
A major figure in British rock music, Grosvenor’s career takes in membership of bands such as Art, Spooky Tooth, Widowmaker and The Rant Band along with the release of a number of solo albums by him over the years.
‘Another Journey’ fields some of Luther’s finest work, recorded in the UK with contributions from former members of Mott The Hoople and The Rant Band, its atmospheric opening and closing tracks of his native Worcestershire’s church bell peals book-ending a small but perfectly-formed set of brand new compositions.

‘Another Journey’ is the new album from Luther Grosvenor
British guitarist Grosvenor is a prominent figure in the birth and development of rock music.
The 1960s finds him in The VIPs with Keith Emerson soon to morph into cult act Art, cutting a sole but innovatory album in ‘Supernatural Fairy Tales’ for the nascent Island Records in the Summer of Love.
The close of that creatively-fecund decade sees Luther teamed with the talent that was Spooky Tooth, recording with the wild genius Guy Stevens who was busy carving careers for Island fellow stablemates Mott The Hoople.
On the cover of the band’s career peak, ‘Spooky Two’ Luther stares contemplatively into a middle distance, every inch the hirsute young hippy, period-perfect, enjoying his moment in the sun.
Post-release of 1971’a critically-acclaimed solo album, ‘Under Open Skies’ Luther finds himself undergoing a style makeover replete with a new stage name in Ariel Bender as he joins the ranks of a glammed up Mott The Hoople (loons and greatcoats packed away).
Luther’s career takes in fine work with Stealer’s Wheel, Widowmaker and The Rant Band along with two further solo albums and acclaimed reconventions of both Spooky Tooth and Mott The Hoople.
This year (2024) sees the 50th anniversary release of ‘The Hoople’, one of the band’s best-remembered releases yielding chart hits in opening and closing tracks, “The Golden Age of Rock ‘n Roll” and “Roll Away The Stone”.
And it also shoes in a new album from Luther himself in ‘Another Journey’, its atmospheric opening and closing tracks of church bell peals book-ending a small but perfectly-formed set of brand new compositions.
Says Luther:
“I got back from touring with The Rant Band with The Hoople’s Ian Hunter and Morgan Fisher and the next thing the dreaded Covid arrived.
“My partner, Ruth Ethridge and I started writing songs which we later put out on self-funded DVD for a local cancer charity and that whole process got me thinking about expanding our ambitions and slowly but surely this ‘other’ journey began to develop.
“So, first off we booked time with Jared Bryant at Severn Valley Studios and got backing tracks down. Next thing, Morgan Fisher came on board along with The Rant Band’s Paul Page, Dennis Debrizzi and Tom Curiano.
“Now, the tracks were developing nicely and I looked to get some more guests involved. Paul Bridgewater is a great singer, an old friend, and Jaqui Savage is bass player in his band, so they were in.
“I had heard Sarah Warren perform locally so I asked her to join us and she brought her beautiful voice to three tracks here. Last but not least, I had another vocalist to hand right under our roof in: Zoe Francis, Ruther’s daughter – so she came along into the studio, too.
Says Luther, “It’s been a while since I made an album and I’m only too aware of the march of time but while Ian and Morgan carry on, I carry on.”
“I’m pleased with the album. It was fun to write, play and see it all come together. I may make another!”
